Famous for its unique structure and antique carpets, Iran’s Carpet Museum has been one of the main tourist destinations in Tehran.

Almost all tourists from around the world know carpet weaving as an original art belonging to Iran and they don’t miss visiting the Carpet Museum while staying in the country.

But neither the museum’s architecture nor the antiquity of its carpets are the subject of this piece. We are presenting a special modern prayer room of the museum that is located outside the main building.

The main purpose of building this prayer room was to provide a place for the workers who were engaged in constructing the Carpet Museum’s building to say their prayers.

At that time, passers-by in the area and workers didn’t have a particular place to say their prayers. Also, the Kiblah (or Qiblah) direction, which is specified in the mosques by a niche (or mihrab), was not indicated.

Therefore, the prayer room was designed not only to make a peaceful place for people but to show the direction of Mecca, to which Muslims turn in prayer.

This modern prayer room is a roofless structure which is designed as a cube inside the other. The exterior cube is in the direction of the neighboring street and the inside cube is in the direction of Kiblah.

The square shape symbolizes simplicity and plainness. These characteristics make the square a proper shape for designing holy places around the world. And, that’s the reason behind making this modern prayer room in square shape.

While approaching this building, visitors can see a pair of metal shoes that are fixed on the ground in front of the room’s entrance. The pair is there to show respect and purity of the place. It’s worth mentioning that Muslims in Iran don’t enter holy places such as mosques with their shoes on.

One other point is that the designer of this structure didn’t made a roof for the room so the rain and the sunlight bring purity and cleanness to it.

Also there is a space between the two squares that gives Muslims a place to stop and regain their inner peace before saying their prayers.
